I have been looking at several books that may be useful for the Knights of St. Michael to aid us in our spiritual growth. We are in a battle for our souls, and while we may not see our enemy, be assured he sees us. “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8. Recognizing the power of temptation, we must be armed up to face the enemy and be ready for battle.
One book that I have found that I think will be good for us is the Manual for Men. The following is from the website where I purchased the book:
Intended Audience
“Ideal for Catholic men of every state in life, husbands, fathers, sons, and brothers, who want more than vague inspiration. Especially valuable for men seeking structure, discipline, and spiritual clarity in a world that confuses strength with selfishness.”

As Anglo-Catholics, this is directly relevant to our lives. Many of the best books are written by and for Roman Catholics, and there are many references to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and other documents that may not pertain to us. That is fine by me. I think it’s easy to compartmentalize the things that are not relevant to us. It’s important to remember that we are members of the Anglican Branch of the Holy Catholic Church. We are Catholic men.
Part One of this book is entitled, “Into the Breach”. Chapter 1 is “A Call to Battle”.
“Men, do not hesitate to engage in the battle that is raging around you, the battle that is wounding our children and families, the battle that is distorting the dignity of both women and men, This battle is often hidden, but the battle is real.”
The book is available in a “Deluxe Leatherette” edition, as well as an eBook format that can be read in the Kindle app or Apple Books app, and an MP3 Audio download. I love to listen to books on my commute to and from the Diocesan Center for Ministry, and I started this one today. Have a look, download if you like, and let me know what you think.
